fotos de PARTY EXPO

{[NUEVO YORK]} in body paint

we came, we saw, we conquered.
face melting good show.
Best show of tour!

we wore underwear. one dude tried to peel the underwear off my (henry's) body. leif told me to find lee in Connecticut and give her a fake tattoo from KFC.

we danced to the sunglasses, we danced to the carnivores, we danced to ourselves, and then we danced to bad credit no credit.

we swept the party expo and now my throat hurts like a crazy. I ate a whole loaf of bread. I have umbrellas on me. I have skeleton legs on me. We beat the crap out of a keyboard during the last song.

Orion left the tour, he will be missed.

We (casey, brandon, henry, em, and billy) are all sleeping this narrow but cozy apartment... I've got a piano key and an earplug in my back pocket. my feet small

MAY 2010- Days 4-6

A sort of co-lab-orative blog:

B fo' Brandon..
Billy is father. He guides us when we lose our sights and no longer can..see he just corrected my spelling as i typed this. He looks out for us all....us pockets, in the back where we are sewed so tightly to your pants...yes your pants. Turn around...HEY!!!

Henry is Grandpa. grumble grumble blergh blergh smile grumble blergh. He wears two pairs of glasses and ambiguous shorts. Do not confuse him with cousin Orion who is a sea horse. p.s. - last night we saw grandma Leo in Athens and his beard was gone. Billy illy illy illy illy illy illy

I'm tearing tape. I was winked at a by the octogenarian that told me to run between the raindrops. I am grandma. I am grandpa. I am jamie lee curtis. I am without a wallet or ID. I am your friend (except when I'm not friendly).
I am Henry, and I'm in Baltimore.

Em is our grandma. she is a leader, but don't ask her questions. tonight she played acoustically, beautifully, sololly and it was incredible. i am reminded how happy i am to play in a band with her. baltimore is full of clumsy, happy people and beatboxing guerilla men. way to go b town!

ok well we must have reached that special time in tour where the cracks start showin..baltimore is real funny. and scary. a lot of the houses are boarded up and run down. most of the people we have interacted with are spaced out and seem a lil high.
Here is an Exact copy of a letter i am writing to my parents as we speak:

MAY 18 2010 "BMORE MLAND"
WELL WE ARE TOTALLY IN THE WIRE. JUST DROVE DOWN A STREET THAT I SWEAR THEY DEFINATELY FILMED ON. YOU KNOW THAT EPISODE WHERE THAT ONE GUY (WHO HAS A CHANGE OF HEART) CAN'T SHOOT THE GUY HE'S SUPPOSED TO KILL AND THAT INNOCENT BOY WITH ASHMA/ASMAH? DIES INSTEAD. WE ARE SITTING IN A PIZZA JOINT RIGHT NOW AND I AM SUPER FULL. WAITING FOR SOME GUY NAMED MCGREGOR BURNS TO CALL. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO PLAY @ A GALLERY CALLED HAMILTON BUT THIS IS AFTER 2 SHOW CANCELLATIONS..BOTH DUE TO LANDLORD ANGER. 1 BAND SAID WE HAD A SHOW BUT THEN THEY GOT EVICTED SO NO SHOW. AND THEN WHEN WE ARRIVED IN TEH PLACE WE WERE SUPPOSED TO PLAY AT, PARKSIDE TAVERN, HAD THE POWER CUT OFF DUE TO A FIGHT WITH THE LANDLORD. WEIRDNESS! SO NOW WE WAITIN AROUND. AND THIS TABLE IS REAL GROSS. HENRY'S PERSPECTIVE: I SAW SOME DRUG DEALS IN FRONT OF THE RESTAURANT WHERE THEY REFUSED (SORT OF) TO WAIT ON US. I'M TRYING TO MAKE A BUNCH OF PHONE CALLS BUT NO ONE IS PICKING US. I LOST MY WALLET. THIS PIZZA IS MAKING ME FEEL SICK. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO TOMORROW BEING BETTER THAN TODAY. ALSO, I'M TRYING NOT TO BE MEAN TO PEOPLE. :) - HENRY
WE ABOUT TO PLAY! BUT JUST ME + BRANDON WITH HENRY + ORION DOIN BACK THEATER.
OK WE PLAYED & I WAS NERVOUS BUT I DID IT!! I KINDA FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO BARF...MAYBE IT WAS THAT PIZZA. WOAH A GUY JUST GOT UP THERE AFTER US AND BEATBOXED AND IT WAS AMAZING!!! HE IS NOW PLAYIN A GUITAR & SINGIN & MAKIN A MILLION LITTLE STRANGE WONDERFUL NOISES IN HIS MOUTH & BEATBOXIN LIKE ALL @ ONCE. P.S. HENRY IS OK HE CANCELLED HIS CARD AND WE GONNA TRANSFER FUNDS & LOAN OUT BAND MONEY. HE IS PROLLY RIGHT ABOUT THE DRUG DEALS THOUGH. THIS AREAS PRETTY SCARY. THERE ARE A LOT OF BOARDED UP HOUSES & BUILDINGS. LIKE A HUGE CHUNK OF THE CITY IS BOARDED UP & RUN DOWN..@ LEAST WHERE WE ARE. WE DO HAVE A PLACE TO SLEEP AND WE ARE OFF TO PHILADELPHIA TOMORROW TO A PLACE CALLED CASTLE GAY! HAHA! IT'S A HOUSE. LOVE, EM

Soar..ing

I will start off; somewhere we left off.

Athens, Ohio was a city of parchessie coffee, hot dog burlesque, and tribal drippy face paint. We had some extra hours in this college town, so we split into uncounted teams dividing by numbers throughout the night. I personally had a Shy hot dog named Salome with O-Mega garlic fries @ O’Betty’s...I’m still having the garlic. Followed by coffee, Candyland, and parchessie with some of our numbered crew. Reuniting at Casa Cantina where we were to perform, Emily tribalized on our faces. In a flurried moment, we were going on next!

Between the projector not lighting up, finishing up some tribal work on fellow Pocketiers faces, and making final theater decisions, the energy was building. The crowd didn’t know when they sat down for the nacho combo that they would soon be beating the gauc. off the tables. Right as we were about to play Love Like, Billy Madison Elliot Mitchell handing me a tub-o-drum sticks with a smile on his painted face. I was like, “WHAT, I thought we weren’t passing out drumsticks here!” He proclaimed, “Follow you heart..” And my heart told me to run my sweaty meat balls to the car and get my bag-o-drumsticks. I made it back before the trumpets sounded; and had a moment to catch my breath. After the show the crowd really spoke up in their appreciation of the layered show we had just cake baked.

We ended up sleeping at an old band member fellow of Billy’s...Haunted House! After another round of Betsy’s tofu dogs and chilli-fries of coarse. In the basement of this house some former undergraduate went crazy, writing on the walls. We may have to use some of his carved encryption for lyrics in the future.

A highlight of the night for me was painting a jet on a little boys wrist, who up until this time in his life feared face paint. Glad to have ushered him into the wondrous world of body paint expression.

The Back Pockets Tour Day 04

This is post Adam wrote about our recent shows!

Almost the entire Back Pockets tour crew circa Chicago

Outside the Chicago Theater, where Martin Lawrence was performing. We saw Vince Vaughn walking around!

There is another deluge of photos from the Back Pockets 2010 tour on Adam's flickr site. We played at the Ottoman Empire in Chicago and it was a wonderful show at an awesome place hosted by the awesome Christine and Aaron (and everyone else who lives there who im sorry i can't remember your names!!). We found cardboard and made giant creatures to populate the performance space. The next day we took it easy and enjoyed the city and later GRL PRTY played a great set with some phat beats and smooth harmonies at Roxaboxen gallery, where we also slept on the floor. We woke up at 5am to drive six hours to the next place!

GRL PRTY in Roxaboxen

In Detroit we went to the Detroit Folk Festival, which was held in this gorgeous giant Victorian mansion called TRUMBULL PLEX with the most wonderful 60s wallpapers I have ever seen, and tons of Detroit-area hippies, hipsters, garden freaks, folk artists, and all around BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE showed up, sold art, did face painting, played music, cooked out, worked on screen printing, etc. etc. etc. . There were little kids drawing pictures of banjos and selling them to us. They had a piano so we performed a special version of "My Demise" with Adam on piano instead of bass. We may do that again in the future...

In Ann Arbor, we stayed at a nice apartment just walking distance from a park, a garden, and a river! This day the Back Pockets tour felt like it had just the right energy balance between "TOURING DIY ROCK BAND CRAZINESS" and "CHILL AMERICAN EARLY SUMMER VACATION".

MAY 2010- Days 1-3

May 13-15: Atlanta to Lexington to Chicago

The Back Pockets ARE:
Emily, Billy, Adam, Katie, Cameron, Casey, Brandon, Orion, Henry

featuring
Mel & Lam

and our tour buddies Masha, Grant, and Cows

IN BRIEF:

welcome to Brandon from Christ Lord who is now playing some amazing trumpet with us for this tour (and beyond?). And thanks to two of our favorite Dodeka-People Mel & Lam who came along to support us and assist with our theatrical weirdness. Also thanks to Masha and Grant who came along too to provide moral support, and my cat Cows who came along to make the first hour of driving a little more fun.

LEXINGTON: We played a show in this really hot attic in a house, called CRUCIAL FUN HOUSE, owned by some really nice punk rock kids. We got there pretty early and found out that shows at this house start at 7 and the cops have magic-alcohol-sniffing wands, so no one is allowed to drink in the house during shows...
So we had some time to kill and we walked around the corner to explore the town and found out that Man Man was playing a show at this little venue...

As brandon (I) walked over to the venue to buy tickets to the show before we played, I spotted honus honus sitting by the van and walked up to him. I asked what time he went on because we were playing as well, and he asked for me to take him to the house we were playing. So honus honus walks over, pays to get into the house show and hangs out, takes a picture of the back pockets van art and tries to help us get our keys out of the car which we locked them in! Meanwhile he tries to see us play but has to return to his show. To make up for missing us, he puts us all on the man man guest list and we see one ridiculous man man performance, introducing some fellow back pockets to the wonders that beautiful band creates.

So yeah! Lexington was cool but that attic was hot but not as hot a Man Man and then we drove through the night to Chicago...

CHICAGO: (we're still in chicago RIGHT NOW) We rolled in at like 6 AM and took a nap and then we (Brandon, Henry, Em, Adam) Wicker Park, ate at Sultan's Market, walked around, and then went to the show space. Its a house venue called Ottoman Empire, we decorated the basement with cardboard and cooked tacos for 20 people with $12.
There were 3 cats called Audry, Hepburn, Business
The show was rad. This dude, that's not connected to us by friends or anything, who saw us last time we were here came out to the show and bought a cd, which was really nice (we got FANS!)
Then most of us slept at Ottoman Empire. Which was cool. And then we made pancakes in the morning.
Most of us went our separate ways for the day. Some walked, some played music, some found 2 boxes full of size 9 shoes for right feet. GRL PRTY (a back pockets side project featuring Em, Katie, and Casey) played a show at Roxenboxen and it was REALLY REALLY GREAT!
And then I (henry) sat down and started writing this tour blog...
I'm super tired so I know that this isn't the best... BUT I or someone else will flesh it out later (probably) and I'll post some photos later on (probably tomorrow).

so RIGHT NOW we'll say goodbye to Katie, Grant, Masha, Mel & Lam tomorrow and go on to DETROIT!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
